In November 2003, San Francisco voters approved Proposition A, a local bond measure authorizing the expenditure of $295 million to address accessibility and modernization issues for 33 projects at 31 school sites throughout the City and County of San Francisco. The San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance (SFGSA) secured $2 million of the $295 million proposed in Proposition A for greening 17 public elementary schoolyards. The bond was approved by over 71% of the voters.

What that means to us here at Commodore Sloat is a one-time budget of $125,000 to further green our school site. The CSS Learning Garden Steering Committee has been working with our bond project architects, Levy Design Partners, a landscape architect, Chris Ford, and the SFUSD greening project manager, Lori Shelton since last spring planning and exploring the possibilities. The following sketch is a rough outline of the area being converted and the general shape of the layout.  There are many factors that needed to be incorporated that are not readily apparent

Primary among them being
  1. The paths and key features throughout the space need to be accessible, and

  2. Upkeep of the space must be sustainable without reliance on the SFUSD landscape department

This drawing reflects many months of discussion and a concerted effort to maximize the amount of green possible with this one time expenditure.

The area represented is the southern third of the upper yard. There will be a wheel chair accessible path beginning at the San Fernando gate entrance and running along the edge of several garden islands veering north to an outdoor amphitheater and continuing to the accessible ramp leading past the native garden to the learning garden and the pod courtyard.

The Northern half of the green space is a low berm covered with native grasses that will eventually have boulders, log seating, and several fruit trees.

The drawings were approved, submitted and have been bid on. We are working out the final details on what will be included in the work done by the contractors and what will need to be done with parent/volunteer labor. There will be many opportunities for the kids and all our families to be involved with planning, plantings, and artistic endeavors as the basic garden areas take shape. We hope you will join us, the CSS Learning Garden Steering Committee, Afterschool on Tuesday , April 17th, 2007 for a Spring Tea, a tour, and an update on where we go from here…
